Thuvakkam – Be The Change

Newsletter Edition: Vol 3. Issue 05 – May 2022

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the Newsletter covering the events of April 2022. Thuvakkam engaged volunteers in a wide variety of events this month, spanning different domains.

Thuvakkam continued afforestation efforts be expanding the Miyawaki forest at Miyawaki Park in Perambur. You can read about that in the spotlight event of this month. Thuvakkam also kept up maintenance in our existing forests, as well as helped coordinate new plantation at the Higher Secondary School in Kelambakkam. We also coordinated the distribution of hospital peripherals in collaboration with First Source.

Every little effort counts, as is shown time and time again by volunteers who take part in Thuvakkam’s events. There is much more to do in the following months, the seeds of which were sown this month.

Looking forward to meeting you then!

Regards,

Thuvakkam Team

Spotlight of the Month

Growing an Urban forest

Thuvakkam’s Urban Forestry efforts continued this month with the plantation of 500 plant saplings at Permabur. In collaboration with Astra Zeneca, Thuvakkam is creating an urban forest using Miyawaki Methodologies at Miyawaki Park in Perambur. Spanning over 2 acres, over 60 species have been selected and planted in the forest. The event held on the 8th of April covered the last batch of saplings.

Volunteers showed up bright and early at 7:00AM from Astra Zeneca to take part in the activity. Notably, the Director of Business Agility, Anu Venugopal, the Senior Director fo GCO Operations, Gaurav Sharma, the Head of Legal & Sustainability, Alex Chandy, and the AM of Global Business Service, Balaji Neelagantan. The event started with a brief introduction about Miyawaki, followed by the dignitaries sharing their experience about plantation, and its need of the hour for combatting climate change. This was followed by an unveiling of a metal board that listed all of plant species that inhabit this Urban forest.

The volunteers then took to the field, planting saplings following the Miyawaki pattern. Their enthusiasm grew as the sun traveled up the sky. With their effort, the event progressed swiftly, as all the 500 saplings were planted before noon.

This is another step in the right direction, following United Nations’ Climate Action Sustainability and Development Goals. Thuvakkam thanks AstraZeneca and the volunteers for taking part in this activity. Thuvakkam will maintain this forest for the next 2 years to ensure the plants become self-sustainable.
