Native Tree Plantation and Maintenance

Background:

Trees are the lungs of Earth. Research states that one matured healthy tree absorbs carbon dioxide at a rate of 48 pounds and lets out nearly 260 pounds of oxygen per year! The benefits of trees are a lot yet we humans tend to neglect them. 

Not only planting of the sapling is the important part, it’s the maintenance of the saplings that is extremely vital. At Thuvakkam, we plant native breed tree saplings and maintain them till they become self-sufficient.

Key responsibilities:

  • Enthuse about nature, tree and environment. 
  • Plant native tree sapling and water them according to the instructions given. 
  • Be Punctual and an active volunteer on the field to create impact.  
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given on-field during the activity.

Skills Required:

  • Everyone is welcome and there are no specific skills required. 
  • Eager to learn more about plants and nature. 
  • Knowledge about trees and plantations is optional.

Time period:

  • Plantation activities are conducted in the morning preferably on the weekends. 
  • Plantation: 4 – 5 hours of your time (varies depending on the plantation area)
  • Maintenance: 1 – 2 hours of your time

Kitchen/Herbal Gardening

Background:

More than 50% of the food we eat is filled with pesticides and chemicals, they are slow poison to our body. Mostly kids of the younger generation have no idea as to where they get their food from. 

Set-up kitchen/herbal gardens at government schools for the kids there. This lets them get closer to nature and at the same time get nutritious and healthy food.

Key responsibilities:

  • Take part in setting up the kitchen/herbal garden at government schools. 
  • Plant kitchen vegetables, herbs in the garden patch or plant bags as per instructions. 
  • Educate and create awareness about the importance of healthy food and garden maintenance to govt school kids. 
  • Punctual and active volunteer on the field to create impact.  
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given on-field during the activity.

Skills Required:

  • Everyone is welcome and there are no specific skills required. 
  • Eager to learn more about setting up a kitchen garden. 
  • Knowledge about kitchen gardening is optional. 

Time period:

3 – 4 hours of your time

Green bottles and Seed Balls

Background:

Increased urbanization resulted in disconnection from nature and environment for people in urban areas. Creating green bottles and seed balls is one of the techniques where we can find ourselves connected back to nature.

Key responsibilities:

  • Learn and create Green bottles and Seed Balls along with the team with the given materials according to the instructions. 
  • Take the green bottles back home and plant the seed balls on the go anywhere while travelling
  • Punctual and active volunteer on the field to create impact.  
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given on-field during the activity.

Skills Required:

  • Love and good at handling children 
  • Interested in education and teaching kids 
  • Everyone is welcome for the event, if you have no idea of  how to teach you can listen to the instruction of the team and perform the basic tasks.

Time period:

2 – 4 hours

Urban forestry

Background:

What we are doing to the forests is a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and one another. Forests are the treasures of our world and it’s high time we start taking care of it. 

Help Thuvakkam build mini urban forests in different localities & urban cities and take care of them till they become self-sufficient. These forests are created using miyawaki afforestation methodology

Key responsibilities:

  • Enthuse about nature and environment
  • Learn about Miyawaki methodology and help the team to create & maintain the forest. 
  • Plant native tree sapling in the forest, water and mulch them according to instructions. 
  • Be Punctual and an active volunteer on the field to create impact.  
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given on-field during the activity.

Skills Required:

  • Eager about learning Miyawaki methodology and setting up forest. 
  • Everyone is welcome and there are no specific skills required

Time period:

  • Plantation activities are conducted in the morning preferably on the weekends. 
  • Plantation: 5 – 6 hours of your time (varies depending on the plantation area)
  • Maintenance: 2 – 3 hours of your time 

Clean-up After dark

Background:

Old buildings and walls need makeover over a period of time just like us humans. This helps them to be neat, clean and sturdy.

Join the team on a night adventure to venture out to public places & government schools to give a complete makeover for the building.

Key responsibilities:

  • Scrubbing and cleaning the walls of the area to be painted. 
  • Give a fresh coat of paint to the walls and follow up with a second coat if instructed. 
  • Draw creative diagrams, slogans and quotes given by the team on the wall. 
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given on-field during the activity and perform accordingly. 
  • As it’s a night event for safety concerns no loitering is allowed and every volunteer must listen to the event coordinator’s instruction and act in accordance with it. 
  • Be Punctual and an active volunteer on the field to create impact. 

Skills Required:

  • Everyone is welcome for the event, if you have no idea of painting you can listen to the instruction of the team and perform the basic tasks. 
  • Basic (or) beginner level knowledge about art & painting is optional.

Time period:

  • This is a night event. 
  • Time: 7 – 8 hours

Creative Art Work

Background:

Revamp old public buildings and walls gigging them a fresh look so people do not keep dirtying it. Join the team and go to public places & government schools to give a complete makeover for the building.

Key responsibilities:

Karka Kasadara

Background:

Education is the one thing no one can take away from a person. But in the current education system everyone is focused more on getting high grades than learning for life. At Thuvakkam, we are trying to create a change and make kids learn for life as we truly believe that kids are the future generation who are going to lead the world into a better place. 

A pre-framed syllabus comprising various topics about self awareness, environmental awareness, practical sciences and general politics are taught to Govt school kids using practical teaching methodologies.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work with the team in updating, drafting, editing and compiling the syllabus for kids to teach. 
  • Plan along with the team to teach the kids the topic of your choice from the premade syllabus. 
  • Teach the kids at school the various topics and post sessions. 
  • Post sessions meet up with the team for improving the session or giving feedback. 
  • Come up with new topics, contents and innovative techniques to teach the kids at school 
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given during the activity. 
  • Be Punctual and an active volunteer on the field to create impact.

Digital Literacy

Background:

When the whole world is moving towards a digitalized era, few kids are not privileged to even learn the basics of computers. Digital literacy is aimed at teaching kids in orphanages and govt schools the basics of computers and its application.

Key responsibilities:

  • Join with the team for scheduling and planning the session for teaching kids the basics of computers. 
  • Teach the kids basics of computers and its applications like MS office and paint 
  • Post sessions meet up with the team for improving the session or giving feedback. 
  • Come up with new topics, contents and innovative techniques to teach the kids at school 
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given during the activity. 
  • Be Punctual and an active volunteer on the field to create impact.

Skills Required:

  • Love and good at handling children 
  • Interested in education and teaching kids 
  • Basic Knowledge about computers and its applications.

Time period:

  • 2 – 3 hours 

Kural – Be a Journalist

Background:

Thuvakkam’s Humanity initiative, “Kural”, aims to digitize and shine a spotlight on positive news from around the world. Through “Be a Journalist,” Thuvakkam gives a chance to the volunteers to become a reporter. A chance to share their world views and current happenings around them on a digital platform.

Key responsibilities:

  • Participate in a small brief orientation session about positive journalism and what to do. 
  • Track developing situations on-field in your locality and area
  • Report important, factual, un-opinionated news and happenings live from the place. 
  • Take interviews of important people upon instruction from the
  • Photograph / Videograph civil issues happening locally and send a photo of issues with basic content
  • Summarize news stories – Write a brief synopsis of news stories to be shared on media
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given for the activity. 
  • Be Punctual and an active volunteer on the field to create impact. 

Skills Required:

  • Comfortable in front of camera 
  • Knowledge on Social awareness and Responsibility 
  • Good Writing skills and Photography or Videography skills.

Time period:

  • 7 hours / week 
  • This can be a hour of your time daily or 2-3 hours in the weekends

Modern Thandora

Background:

What most of the social issues lack in the society is the voice of the issue and basic awareness of the happenings. Join Thuvakkam to bring social awareness to the general public using a mixture of different art forms like flashmob, mime, street play and skit.

Key responsibilities:

  • Come for the initial practice session before the event day as instructed by the team. 
  • On the day of the event, be early for getting ready and final rehearsals. 
  • Execute the modern thandora along with the team mates. 
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given during the activity. 
  • Be punctual and an active volunteer on the field to create impact.

Skills Required:

  • Comfortable performing arts in front of a public audience and camera. 
  • Everyone is welcome for the event, if you have no idea of  how to teach you can listen to the instruction of the team and perform the basic tasks. 
  • Knowledge of art forms like dance (or) acting is optional.

Time period:

  • Both practice and event will mostly be on weekends. 
  • Practice Session: 1 -2  hours [min 2 sessions depending on the script/play]
  • Event Day: 3 – 4 hours

Mannin Maindhargal

Background:

Love is universal but few people are deprived of it. Kids and elders present at orphanages, institutions and homes yearn for that affection. Join the Thuvakkam team and spend some quality time with them. Talk, play, teach, share stories and celebrate functions, birthdays and festivals with them! Let’s share love to spread humanity in this world.

Key responsibilities:

  • Come to the orphanage / institution / home and spend time with the kids (or) elders. 
  • Take part in the games and fun activities! Also can come up with new ones on the spot. 
  • Be a team player, listen to the instructions given during the activity. 
  • Be Punctual and an active volunteer on the field to create impact. 

Skills Required:

  • Everyone is welcome and there are no specific skills required.

Time period:

  • 3 – 4 hours

Photography / Video Shooting

Background:

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. And when it comes to social work, such pictures have changed the way the world views an incident. Be it droughts in Africa, to reviving tiger population in India. Thuvakkam has relied on volunteers and their keen eye to generate awareness on a wide array of topics. Photography and Videography help to convey the raw impact of the story directly to the people.

Key responsibilities:

  • Be vigilant to the happenings around you, and be ready to capture the moment
  • If covering an event, arrive on time
  • Ensure that the photos are duly shared with the Thuvakkam team, along with details

Skills Required:

  • Identify capturable moments
  • Photo composition and color sense

Time period:

  • 3hrs/week
